Beginner's Guide to Electrolytes
We are already aware that proper hydration is very important for runners. When we talk about the term hydration, electrolytes has a major role to play. Let us know more about it.
What are electrolytes?
Certain components are necessary in our body to promote muscular and cardiac functions. These are termed as electrolytes. They play a pivotal role in digestive functions as well.
Components of electrolytes
Sodium, Magnesium, Sulfate, Chloride, Phosphate, Bicarbonate, Carbon and few other components comprise electrolytes.
Effects of deficiency in electrolytes
A lot of energy expenditure is done in any physical exercise. Running is no different. Deficiency in these components can make you feel dizzy during your performance. Problems like dry mouth is also very common.
Cramping
This is one of the most evident indicators of lack in electrolyte. While performing any sport there is a pain (that ranges from mild to severe) in the muscles which is commonly known as cramping.
Consumption of Electrolytes
Athletes are suggested to consume electrolyte generally post workout. This is advised so that you can replenish the constituents lost by excessive sweating. Electrolyte supplements are available in various forms such as Tablets, or Electrolyte solutions.
Effectiveness
Perfectly balanced electrolytes can make a distinct change in the athlete’s performance. Regular post workout consumption of electrolytes for at least one month would make you experience increased levels of energy, more mobility and agility and better endurance during any sport.
The term ‘electrolytes’ may seem very simple but plays a major role for any runner. For marathoners it holds special importance as they have to deliver active movement for prolonged period of time.
