What is Runner's Toenail?

Gunjan Rastogi

Runner’s toenail, one of the most common running injuries, is a condition where the area under and around the toenail begins to turn black. This happens due to the repeated stress of training. While running, the tips of your toes slam into the front of your shoe. A few times doesn’t matter but when training regularly, as for marathon runners, hit the same area thousands of times tend to damage the toe. Lightly hitting your toenail over and over again is bound to lead to bleeding under your nail, which starts to look black.

Runners experience these symptoms for medically termed subungual hematoma - sharp, throbbing pain, dark red or black discoloration under some or all of the nails, and/or swelling or tenderness at the tip of the toe. In some cases, it can lead to serious complications like the loss of the nail or infection.

A mild discomfort/pain is expected which often is harmless and subsides in a couple of days. Blood accumulation under the toenail can lift the nail from its bed and hence, can be painful. So, if you experience any sharp pain or complications or any fluid build-up, a doctor visit is suggested, and also, if you notice any infection.

There are some following tips to avoid getting runner’s toenail –

  • Trim your toenails regularly
  • Try wearing socks with plenty of cushioning
  • Lace your shoes properly
  • Reduce your mileage for some time

Mostly, it’s self-healing and though it’s difficult to let the injury alone, it is better to avoid touching the area so as to not risk getting an infection. If you experience any complications, best to visit a doctor for the right treatment.
