8 Signs Your Body is Dehydrated After Running

Gunjan Rastogi

Most likely, you are already dehydrated by the time you will feel thirsty. Our body gives us various signs when it needs water before we even realise we are thirsty. Your performance can be compromised due to dehydration. Here are some common signs to look out for -

  1. Feeling thirsty
  2. Dry mouth, lips and/or eyes
  3. Cramps
  4. Feeling lightheaded
  5. Headache
  6. Dark yellow and strong-smelling urine
  7. Muscle spasms
  8. Lethargy

If you have any of the following, dehydration can occur more easily -

  • Diabetes
  • Been vomiting or diarrhoea
  • Been in the sun too long (heatstroke)
  • Drank too much alcohol
  • Sweated too much after exercising
  • Been taking medicines that make you pee more (diuretics)

To take care of your body’s demands is of utmost importance. If mild dehydration is not dealt with appropriately in time, it can lead to severe cases and in that scenario, you might need to visit a doctor where a blood test might be done to check your level of electrolytes, which can help indicate fluid loss. Loss of fluids can affect your kidney and hence, dehydration shouldn’t be taken lightly.

Keeping your body hydrated and healthy while pre-run, running and post-run should hold priority.
